More shakeups in 2007 for telecom

There has been substantial change in Canada’s telecom services market in 2006 and it appears as though 2007 will also see more shakeups in this one-time monopoly market.This year was the year that VoIP really took hold, but it wasn’t the pure-play VoIP competitors which captured the lion’s share of the market. Despite hitting the market first and garnering significant mindshare, these trailblazers were left in the dust by the massive marketing machines of the cable companies.Since introducing its cable telephony service in July 2005, Rogers Communications has captured more than 270,000 customers. If the growth trend seen in Q3 continues into the fourth quarter, the venerable communications and media conglomerate could end 2006 with about 400,000 VoIP subscribers. Vidéotron ltée, which introduced its telephony service in early 2005, is also likely to top the 400,000-subscriber mark by the end of this year after nearly reaching 350,000 customers at the end of September.
