RIM appoints new executives

Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) appointed two key additions to its executive team Tuesday, including a new chief operating officer and a chief marketing officer. Kristian Tear will join RIM as chief operating officer, leaving his role as executive vice-president at Sony Mobile Communications, RIM announced in a release. Tear joins RIM after a long career at Sony Corp. and Sony Ericsson, where he has held numerous senior management roles including chairman of the board of Sony Mobile Americas and Sony Mobile International, and corporate vice-president of Sony Ericsson for Western Europe. At RIM, he will be tasked with overseeing “all operational functions for handhelds and services, including research and development, products, global sales, manufacturing and supply chain,” the company said in the release. Frank Boulben will also join RIM as its new marketing chief, leaving his position as the executive vice-president of strategy, marketing and sales for U.S.-based startup LightSquared Inc., to lead RIM’s global marketing efforts, the release said. Prior to joining Lightsquared, Boulben served as the global director of commercial strategy for Vodafone Group Plc, and as the executive vice-president of brand and consumer marketing for Orange Group, the company said. "Kristian and Frank bring extensive knowledge of the rapidly changing wireless global market and will help RIM as we sharpen our focus on delivering long-term value to our stakeholders," Thorsten Heins, RIM's president and CEO, said in a statement. "Most importantly, both Kristian and Frank possess a keen understanding of the emerging trends in mobile communications and computing," he said. They join RIM as the company undergoes a restructuring effort following a senior management overhaul earlier this year precipitated by declining sales and market share of BlackBerry mobile devices.
