MTS profits increase on wireless, data revenues

MTS Telecom Services Inc. increased its profits in 2011 due in part to growth in its wireless data revenues, the company reported Friday. Data revenues climbed 46.1 per cent over the same period a year earlier, totalling $356.3 million for the year and $92.8 million for the fourth quarter, the company said. “At December 31, 2011, 41% of all postpaid wireless subscribers had data plans, up from 27% in 2010,” the company said in a release, adding that it had 496,432 wireless subscribers by the end of the year, a 2.6 per cent increase over the same time a year earlier. The company’s wireless revenues increased by 8.6 per cent to $356.3 million for the year and by 8.5 per cent to $92.8 million during the fourth quarter, the company said. IPTV revenues and IP revenues also continued to climb in 2011, the company said, rising 19.3 per cent and 8.7 per cent, respectively. The company’s IPTV revenues reached $70.6 million for the year, “driven by fewer customers on promotional plans, subscriber growth and price increases,” the release said. MTS said 64 per cent of its IPTV customers now subscribe to its premium service. Converged IP revenues totalled $235.4 million for the year, it said, and Internet revenues grew in 2011 to total $102.6 million. The company said it had 188,946 high-speed Internet subscribers by the end of the year. In all, the company reported profits of $167.1 million for the fiscal year—including $36.9 million in the fourth quarter—which represented an 18.3 per cent increase over the previous year. The company reported lower total revenues but noted it had considerably lower capital expenditures and benefited from cost-saving programs and strategic growth that allowed it to record increased net earnings.
